Elder Care in Huntersville NC: How to Change Your Mindset Around Taking Time Away from Caregiving

Some aspects of caregiving, such as your feelings about taking time away from caregiving, rely more on your own mindset than they do anything else. If your message to yourself as a caregiver is that you can’t take time away, then you’ll look for ways to disallow that for yourself. On the other hand, if your mindset is more accepting of the idea, you’re going to be more apt to take that time.

Realize that Your Life Has Meaning, Too

You’re likely a family caregiver because your loved one is important to you. As her caregiver, you’re likely to place her needs quite high in your priority list, too. That can often mean that subconsciously, you place your needs and your life much lower on your priority list. The more quickly you realize that your life is just as important, the quicker you can get on with scheduling some time away for yourself.

Ask for Help and Make Sure You Find It

In many cases, caregivers don’t take time away because they need someone to be there with their elderly loved one when they can’t be. if you’re not already asking for help, you need to be. Talk with other family members and look for other options for respite care, such as hiring elder care providers. Don’t stop until you have a list of possible solutions.

Commit to Taking Time Away

You have to make a commitment to yourself that you’re going to take time away and then you need to keep that commitment. Set up your coverage and then stick to your plans to have some time off. If you don’t make this an appointment with yourself, you’ll talk yourself out of taking any time away at all. Remember also that if you’re on pins and needles the entire time waiting for your loved one to call you or you’re checking in every few minutes, you’re not letting yourself get away.

Fill Your Time Away with Activities You Enjoy

Your time away is just that. It’s you’re time to do activities that you enjoy so that you’re in a better frame of mind when you get back to your normal caregiving duties. Allow yourself to do things that are fun and enjoyable. You don’t have to always be doing something for someone else.

You don’t have to try to change your entire mindset overnight. For some people, it’s a process that takes a little bit of time.
