Making the Most of a Visit with Your Father Who Relies on Senior Care in Ballantyne NC!

“ A Son’s story regarding his visits with his aged father”

My father has been relying on senior care for more than six months and while I have to admit that I didn’t know what kind of impact it would have on his health, and even his emotional state of mind at the time, it has been great for him.  I think like many family members who have to travel down this road at some point in their lives, I didn’t know the first thing about senior home services, but I learned an awful lot in the first few weeks.

One thing that I learned during those first weeks I learned from the senior care service provider.  Michael is an experienced caregiver who truly does care about the people who rely on his services.  He taught me a few things that helped me make the most of my time and visits with my father and it has made an impact on our relationship as well.

One of the first things that Michael said to me was to avoid talking about his health. Don’t ask him twenty questions about how he’s feeling or what’s going on with his medication or whether he has any medical appointments coming up.  As Michael had said, when you spend more time, or especially the early portion of my time with him talking about those things, then it takes away from the visit itself.  Michael advised me to make the visit about him, about things that interest him.  He also mentioned that if I focused on his health and how he was feeling, then that would just highlight to my father the things that he is having trouble with.

“He wants to have things normal again,” Michael told me.  “He wants to have some semblance of his old life back, so when you visit, be sure to focus first on the things that he’s doing, the things he might want to do, and this will encourage him to keep looking to the future with hope and ambition.”

I have to admit that this advice was great.  My father is actually more excited about some of the things that he plans to do this summer and I am too.  Visiting with him has also improved our relationship and he confides in me some of his hopes, dreams, and even fears, which is something he never did before.
