Mom Supporting Mom- When Your Elderly Mother is being a Caregiver in Gastonia NC!

( A story)

With the advancements in modern medicine, more people are enjoying life well into their 90s these days, than ever before.  That means that if your grandmother is still active and on the go, then the responsibility for being a caregiver may fall upon your mother who might be heading into her 70s.Caregiver Gastonia NC

I didn’t think much about it at the time, mostly because I was living on the other side of the country when it happened, but my grandmother, who seemed to have a better and more active social life than I did, began to have some health problems after her 95th birthday.  At first, it was a broken hip and that left her in a nursing home for two weeks.  Most of her friends had passed away by that time, and the support she received from the church was more emotional, than physical.

My mother was called upon to be there for her mother, even though she lived more than 3 hours away by car.  As I said, I didn’t think much about what my mother was going through at the time trying to be a home care provider for my grandmother, but it must have been a tough challenge.  It’s not easy to see your loved one get old and then for their health to begin its decline.  When my grandmother turned 95, it seemed as though she could be around for another 20 years, she was so fit and lively.

After the first fall and broken hip, things changed quickly.  My mother was trying to convince my grandmother to sell the house, and move into a smaller place, or move up to Connecticut to live with her.  My grandmother refused, saying that she didn’t want to leave her friends where she was in New Jersey.  I think that was understandable, but it placed an even greater amount of pressure on my mother to care for her and still take care of her own health.

I tried to talk to my mother and tell her that she needed to take care of herself, but she felt that this was her burden, her responsibility.  Being 3,000 miles away, I simply didn’t appreciate the situation for what it was.  If I had a chance to go back, I would make sure that my mother hired a professional caregiver for my grandmother, so that she would be able to take care of herself first, then support my grandmother in between.
