Senior Care in Gastonia NC: Stroke Risks For Women

Both men and women can be affected by stroke, but women may be more at risk than their male counterparts. They go on to say that 55,000 more women than men experience a stroke in a year than do men.  The National Stroke Association proclaims that stroke is the third most common cause of death in women, but the fifth in men.  In addition, it appears that the stroke rate has dropped for men in recent years, but not for women.  What causes this difference in stroke risk between men and women and how worried should you be about your mom having a stroke?

What Research Says

The good news is that the rate of stroke overall is going down in the United States. However, it appears the rate is going down for men, but not for women.  Researchers suggest that the reason the stroke rate in women may not be declining is that the normal means of stroke prevention may not work as well in women.  It’s possible that some of the risk factors that lead to a stroke, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, are not controlled as well in women or they are more severe, to begin with.  Researchers believe that additional study is needed to determine what is causing the stroke rate for women to remain steady in the face of declining rates for men.

Additional Stroke Risks for Women

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are risk factors for stroke in both men and women.  However, there are risk factors that exist for women, but not for men.

Some of those risk factors are:

Migraines: Women who experience migraines with aura have a stroke risk that is 2.5 times higher.  It should also be noted that migraines occur more frequently in women than in men.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT):
HRT slightly increases the risk of stroke.

Preeclampsia/Eclampsia History:
A woman who has had preeclampsia or eclampsia has a higher stroke risk for up to 30 years after giving birth.

Miscarriage and Clotting Disorders:
Women who have had two or more miscarriages are more at risk for blood clots, which also increases the risk of stroke.  A history of deep vein thrombosis also increases the risk for stroke.

Women Have Unique Stroke Symptoms

Women often report symptoms of stroke that are outside the usual signs, which can make it more difficult to recognize when a woman is having a stroke.  This poses an additional problem for women since treatment for stroke must be administered within three hours to ensure the greatest benefit.

Some unique symptoms a woman may experience are:

-Fainting
-Hallucinations
-Nausea or vomiting
-Pain
-Trouble breathing
-Hiccups
-Seizure
-Confusion
-Agitation
-Weakness
-A sudden change in behavior

If your mom suffers a stroke, a home care provider can help them to remain independently at home while they recover.  Home care providers can assist with ambulation, dressing, and grooming.  A home care provider can also help your mom prepare meals and eat.  Other services a home care provider can do include light house cleaning, transportation, and laundry.
